I haven't even put Manfrotto on the list as I don't think they are as compact when folded - the Giotto folds to 40cm

The Giotto seems very portable to me - it is solid, light and the ball head is easy to cinch up to be movable without locking. Build quality is excellent, but it isn't cheap.
I've also used one leg of it as a monopod a few times, it takes moments to convert so that's a plus point compared to tripods that can't do this.

It definitely isn't cheap but options do seem quite limited for these type of features so I guess they can charge a premium - looking at weight comparisons between the aluminium (1.5kg) & CF version (1.28kg) it actually seems quite small so maybe the alumnium one would be the most cost effective option

Thanks for the link - they look interesting but the website is awful, can't find much detail about the specs (folded height, weight etc)?
The Velbon Rexi L has also been recommended, it doesn't come with spikes though which are pretty much essential
I'm not swaying more toward the Benro, specifically this one:
