I know I might look an idiot, but I've got to ask. Whats a Ghost PM?

If somebody sends you a PM (Personal Messages or something like that) they can still edit it before you read it.
Since you can't delete a PM you could send one and change your mind so the only thing you can do is delete the contents.
The receiver then gets an empty PM.

And the problem is it sits there telling you that you have an unread message and you don't.
Soooooooooo the real question is - how can you get rid of that darn notification of a ghost message ?

You can opt not to receive notifications in your Profile I think, but then you won't receive genuine ones.
Best regards, John

You can actually delete the PM rather than just the contents. If somebody sends you a PM (Personal Messages or something like that) they can still edit it before you read it.

The receiver then gets an email saying there is a message and when you log in nothing is there.

And the receiver does their nut trying to find this message - which, after a few minutes , they realise doesn't exist because the original sender decided to delete it . Also you can't ask them what was in it - cos the Forum Software only tells you that you have a PM - it doesn't tell you who originated said PM.
So when feeling throughly frustrated after getting that notification , you then find that you can't remove the ' new PM ' indicator from the box underneath your name on every Forum page

Is this correct? I received a couple of ghost PMs earlier this year but once I visited the PM inbox the notification on every forum page went back to 'My Messages' instead of '1 Message', even though I didn't actually read any messages in the inbox.

You were lucky
I still have the notification of a Ghost Message which dates back to the 27th and the 1 message sign is still showing .
Another one came in today at 13.02 according to my e-mail in box - but that's not showing at all but the one that came in at 13.08 was a genuine PM and it showed up as a new message and has been read and answered

I reckon it`s time for an Exorcist - maybe we could all join hands and try to contact the living - or maybe a member who can call on the Dark Arts ?
I`m up for a Goat Sacrifice if I can have the meat for later !!
Chicken & Duck livers are handy !
Maybe a small sheep ?
I`ll go cast me runes then................................

Maybe the person who sends a PM, but then removes it before it is read by the recipient, could just change it to say something along the lines of "sorry I changed my mind"?
Just so the recipient isn't left wondering who and what?
