Get a grip ... or don't. K10D Grip.

Now I'd really like someone to disagree with this fellow but he makes a good point.

Is the grip quite secure and rigid, or is it prone to some wobble?

I've seen the new grip and handled it. It would seem perfectly fine, no wobble at all. However, I won't be turning my K10D from a fantastically well balanced camera into a huge brick!

Grip? you mean that thing that makes the camera difficult to hold and puts "too much pressure on the fingertips" (Practical Photgraphys comment, not mine)

Seriously though, I'm with John and wont be turning my K10D into a Canonesqe like brick The camera is big enough as it is, in fact I found it too big at first, now I pick up my istD and wonder.....should I buy a battery grip!

It was one of the results that came up from Google... some forum of little or no consequence somewhere out there.

I'm loving the K10D grip - I don't find it a pain at all... Yes it vastly increases the bulk and weight of the camera but I feel this is a big help using chunky lenses like my Sigma EX's - makes it feel more balanced rather than front heavy. It's not at it's best in portrait mode, the control wheels, especially the rear aren't as good as they can be but I like it a lot when shooting landscape mode as there's more room for my hand to wrap around the grip and it stops my little finger falling off the bottom of the camera.

It's not in the same realm as the grip on the MZ-S - a thing of sculptured beauty and pretty damned comfy too!!!

Yep. I am also enjoying my D-BG2 grip on my K10D. The extra weight does take getting used to after using an *ist D (without grip) and I agree it isn't as beautiful (or as ergonomic) as the MZ-S grip. Having the extra battery capacity will be useful for me but also (and I read this in the D-BG2 manual) it stores an extra SD card and a PENTAX F remote! I couldn't resist so I ordered the remote last week!

To be honest I got mine from the U.S so saved a lot of £££'s over the ridiculous cost of a new one here in the UK. £170 is way too much to pay.

The grip isn't in the slightest bit wobbly, it's as solid as a rock. I like the handling of the camera with the grip and am not at all worried about the extra weight. Spare battery, remote and SD card all in place too

My handspan (tip of thumb to tip of little finger) is around 9inches (depending on the arthritis) so I consider myself to have big hands, I find the K10D a little on the large side...I suppose thats what comes with playing with "ladies" cameras for all these years...MZ7 MZ5n istD.......

anyone got a comparison pic of an Ist D with grip and a K10D with grip?

I'm using the *Ist D with grip (cheers Mannesty) and find it made a serious improvement to the feel and handling of the camera - especially when shooting portrait.

I use a couple of sigma EX lenses mainly (24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2. and without the grip the *Ist D was seriously front heavy

No green fingers here!!! Nor do I have a bunge of bananas hanging off the end of each arm - guess it must be just the way that it sits in my grubby mitts.

Anyway....... did I say I liked it?

Like you, I do like the *ist D with the grip and I did try the K10D with and without the grip whilst deciding whether to buy the grip as well (thanks for your patience Chris!). However, the K10D is a lot bigger than the *ist D and the grip made the camera far too big for my taste. If I'd wanted a brick-sized camera I would have bought a Canon

To answer the original point, the grip attaches very solidly and doesn't wobble at all. I'm also mystified by the comment in Practical Photography about the grip being too narrow in portrait orientation - the reviewer must have hands a lot bigger than mine!

It is conceivable that the grip has some movement when fitted to the body. That'll be the sponge rubber weather seals moving. On the grip I have (I don't have the camera yet), there seems to be plenty of positive location pins to ensure an adequate fit to the camera.
