I would like to start this post as General chit chat only because I have wanted to ask some things and I would have to start a new post for 1 question so I have a question
1. When taking a photo what would be your best setting, like av manual mode or do you use a set program mode for different shoots?
2. I would also like to ask if any realy writes down the settings of what they use went they have taken the shoot.

Q1, 95% av mode, raw+Jpeg(low res), lowest ISO can get away with.
Q2, Use the exif data if I need to reference.

To answer you: I generally use P mode, but check what it is set at. I change it depending on focal length, etc. Sometimes snap to action mode as it is the quickest was to switch to AF-C.

Never write down - use Photome or Lightroom to read the Exif to find out what I set.

Depends on the camera and what your taking pictures of.

I'm mainly taking wildlife. On the K-x I would normally use shutter priority. On the K-5 I use TAV, where I choose both the shutter speed and aperture.

If I were taking landscapes then I'd mainly use aperture priority, unless I specifically wanted a blurred effect.

Well that’s interesting you never write anything down mmmmm and use light room thats a new way of doing it.
i think lots of us do that i think thats going to be the anwser a lot of us are going to use i think but we will see

Seem to recal a poll sometime back that confirmed it.

On my K20 I have never used tav or P modes, most of my shots are static, so very rarely use Tv either. Perhaps I should get a discount ? after all I only use such a small percentage of the functions available.

i use av sv and manul never use any others but i do write every setting down on what shoots i do i think its helps so much

Have you really never heard of the EXIF data? There's nothing new about it.

Everything about the shot is recorded. Writing things down is totally unnecessary.

Any half-decent image viewer or editor will show you the EXIF data for each shot. In Irfanview, for instance, just press "E" and up it comes.

I'd never get any shooting done if I did that. I'd also miss an awful lot of nice shots.

In lightroom you can set up smart Colletions and filters based upon some of the EXIF data if you want to analyse your shots in taht way

so what your saying is you never look at your setting and at your srceen when you take the shoot you go all the way home get light room out and then look and it tells you what setting you used your mad get a pad and pen and have a little look at what you have taken and then you have a record of what you did on the shoot in the feild unless you take a laptop every where with you and light room,i know you can look at the EXIF data but at the time of you takening the shoot i wite it down as alog for me so i can record what i use there and then not when i go home.

I look in the viewfinder or lcd when I'm taking the shot. That tells me what settings I have. At anytime after I've taken the shot I can see the setings by reviewing on the screen. When I get home I can check them on the pc. What more could anyone want?

Av with A series and later lenses, manual with M series and earlier lenses.

I don't write anything down in the field when using digital. I am trying to get into the habit of making notes via a digital dictaphone when using film, largely because I am always being asked what lens I used for a particular shot (e.g., for the PPG) and often I do not remember.

The camera tells you the settings you used. No need to go home. Get out your camera and try it. Then throw away your notebook.

ETA: Look at a picture on the screen, then press the INFO setting a few times. All the information will be presented to you.

I use Av 99% of the time. I never write anything down, not even the location - I have GPS for that. I may check the settings in camera on the first shot, especially if it is an important shot, but I don't check constantly.

I drive my husband nuts enough with my photography as it is - if I were to write down the details of every shot I suspect he would divorce me .

I used to record everything but the last time I wrote anything down was on honeymoon (40 years ago) and my new wife threw my book into the sea and threatened to do the same with me if she saw me starting again.

Sorry I forgot the original query - if I think about a shot I tend to use AV or TAV but tend to keep the camera on the green setting incase its required quickly
