Well, if it is the beauty of leafs, you want to show, get in closer and concentrate on the fine detail. When using natural light, try leafs that are backlit, they reveal these structures at the best, and work during overcast weather, or directly after a shower of rain. It saturates the colours.
Low f stops or wide apertures are useful in throwing the background out of focus. (like the red rose) But result in a very small depth of field. (dof)
And dof is what is needed if you get in close for detail. (I.E small apertures and large dof)
Keep on trying, but try to eliminate everything what is not essential for the picture.

LOL, Paul, that made me giggle early morning, I was quite tempted yesterday night to throw a comment such as yours but then refrained myself in case I stir something I shouldn't. .Indeed it is a nice Leaf and Leaves are indeed beautiful

But I see it doesn't need to be monday for you to bring your humouristic side to the surface and go for it huh? .
Good one,
And Cloudhunter, hope you take note of Martin's advice and follow it so you can develop more your artistic skills. Its comments help and advice from members like him and many others here who take the time and effort to evaluate our images and steer us to the right paths artistically and technically for that matter.
Good luck
