According to the man at Canon the future of semi-Pro DSLR's is probably full frame.

"the future of semi-pro DSLRs is probably full-frame, says Masaya Maeda, Managing Director and Chief Executive, Image Communication Products Operations at Canon"

I thought l saw on that "other" Pentax forum in the USA, that Pentax have officially said that a FF is on it's way, it being announced early 2014, available mid 2014.

As i said a couple of months ago, ff will become the normal sensor in DSLR due to economies of scale and technology improvements. I should think this will be within the next four to five years now Canon has said what its said. No doubt FF sensors will increase in size so we will see a range of FF sensors from 10 megapixel up to and past 100 megapixel.

No official company announcement but it was reported that a Pentax executive at CP+ confirmed that a ff was under development in an interview. The delivery date is speculation by the interviewer.

Seems certain enough to me. I think we'll get a ff for not a lot more than current APSC launch prices. I'm looking forward to it as having two bodies ff/apsc will give dual use to lenses. I'll only be buying ff compatible lenses from now on.

Nonsense?

Q&A with Pentax’s John Carlson: A deeper look inside the new MX-1, Pentax’s ILCs and lenses
Quote:
DE: I know we've asked this before, but the question keeps coming from readers so I'll ask it again: full frame. Back in October, Japan's Impress DC Watch blog published an interview with Pentax Japan's development chief, Toshiyuki Kitazawa. He was quoted as saying that Pentax was working on a full-frame camera, and had definite plans for a product launch in 2013 or later. Given Kitazawa-san's statement, can you make any comments about Pentax's full-frame future?

JC: Only that Pentax has confirmed that yes, he made that statement, and it's an accurate statement. But as far as timing and specifications, we don't have any information to share at this point. It's an area we continue to study, and to look for a good solution.

Now that full frame is appearing in cameras the size and price of the 6D, the future of APS-C at the semi-pro level is in doubt, he says: 'That's something we're considering at the moment. From our semi-pro users there's still demand for APS-C but in the future, I think we will see an increase in the number of full-frame models.'

look at the price of the d600 its the same as the K-5 when i bought it.
full frame has filtered down to APC-C prices from 2 yrs ago.
It makes perfect sense that the next flagship from pentax will be full frame.

At £300/£430 to upgrade thats fine but anymore i would not bother...
There is lot of K10/K100 /K110/K20/K200 owners who still use them, so price is an issue...

I honestly think that Pentax should continue with APS-C cameras, plus 645D. There will be a miniscule market for FF Pentax, most of those who've clamoured for FF now have Nikon, Canon or Sony( ) - I've actually got the D3 which I am happy with - but I have a closer emotional attachment to my Pentax gear.

Hope to be using my 36x24mm Pentax cameras soon, need to justify purchase of Delta 100 and 3200 last weekend

It wouldn't make commercial sense of Canon/Nikon/Sony start making all their DSLRs from entry level upwards as FF.

Maybe but humans don't last forever and there's always a fresh supply of younger photographic enthusiasts coming into the market, or even those who've discovered the hjoys of snapping at an older age. It's not a static market

As you say, it is not a static market.
- As new FF cameras are introduced at a much lower price point, they start competing with premium APS-C cameras.
- On the other end, new compact system cameras with APS-C sensors are introduced and can attract those who want a very compact camera (Nikon 1 - Canon M, etc)
- I imagine that a DSRL brand image depends also very much on the premium models, even though they are only loss leaders

So I am not sure Pentax will have an option if they want to expand their market share.

That makes some sense given Phones are eating into Compact sales. Compacts fight back , so DSLR's are separated from Compacts with FF sensors.

Interesting times ahead. All designed to extract more sales out of us of course

I personally like the idea of FF capable lenses fitted to an APS-C body, you don't get all the edge nasties that are possible with some FF lenses.

I haven't tested my K5-II in anger yet, that comes next Sunday when racing starts again for the 2013 season, but if it focuses as well in poor light as I'm hoping with my Siggy 70-200mm 1:2.8 lens attached, I may not need to buy another body, ever.

In fact, I'll be trying the DA*60-250mm 1:4 again and see if I can get more keepers from that.

But camera makers are reliant on sensor makers, if sensor makers stop making APS C sensors as the price of FF sensors fall then camera makers will have no choice.

I think im correct in thinking Sony are the only sensor manufacturer who makes DSLR and they are hardly making a wide range of APSC bodies are they?

Samsung?

Actually, I'm not sure if they make sensors, but I'd be surprised if they don't.
