From my trip to Shetland

I went to Shetland last week for work and managed to squeeze in a few hours for myself and the camera.

The weather was mostly wet, but there were some periods of sun between the showers.

I'm not long started with 'flickr', just experimenting and feeling my way at the moment, I'll see how it goes.



Passing the bottom part of Orkney, K10D + Pentax 17-70




Trondra, on Shetland, about half way between, Scalloway and Hamnavoe, again the 17-70,




Don't normally do "Wild-Life", but I liked the blue and yellow colours, plus it had a 'spot' on it's head, much prefer the 'imperfect', again the 17-70.

I love those skies, although they probably mean that the moment was fleeting before the rain hit again!

The third one is a really nice shot, but I would remove that yellow base entirely as I find it a bit distracting. When that is done it also needs perhaps a bit off the left edge to balance up the composition again.

It looks like a great destination, we'll get there one day.

Trying to arrange my work calendar to fit it in

Hi John,

The sky's were incredible that evening, ( pic 2 ), I sat near the waters edge, planning on taking a picture or two every 20 minutes or so until the sun set.

Unbelievably, the sky and light changed from minute to minute, 20 or 30 pictures quickly changed to 300 !!!

I love going to Shetland, my next trip is in January, hoping to fit in the "Up Helly-Ah", Viking Fire Festival, just don't tell my boss !!!

Amazing skies John, superb clouds in 1 but no 2 my fav, just lovely light, very peaceful scene.

I'm unsure about the yellow handrail in the gull image, the blue and yellow work, I have looked at it with it in and out... think I prefer it in, as it goes with the gull's eye and bill.
The rest of the composition is great love the 'space' the gull 'looking' into.

Never been there but would love to go sometime.

I do like to give the subject something, "to look into", so I left a lot of 'space', for that.

As for the yellow rail, it was left in on purpose to go with the beak and eye, I did crop a bit of dark woodwork below it, but I do like the yellow rail in the picture.

Think of it more as an abstract than a wildlife picture .

Lerwick harbour has a lot of luminous paintwork, yellow, orange and green, so I had to include part of it in the image.
