From my new Sigma 70-300 mm

Here are a few examples shot with my new Sigma 70-300 mm APO lens. The lens seems well designed, and I'm very pleased so far, although I need some more practice...

With reference to Clarky's moon picture, this is how the moon looks from the Northern hemisphere. Handheld at f/8 1/250 300 mm, ISO 200.



Finally a portrait of our neighbour's cat (f/11 1/180 240 mm).

I especially like the blue tit; lovely contrast between the sky and the feathers. Impressive details in the cat's eyes too.

I don't own this lens but from what i have seen it has to be the best value for money lens on the market.

That cat is a wonderful image. They look so soft and attractive, but in reality would tear us limb from limb if we happened to be a small as a mouse.

Our oldest cat purrs sweetly as he rakes you with his claws. The youngest one constantly whinges - let me in, let me out, fuss me, feed me....

Very nice. I have the same lens and like it a lot as a walkaround lens for wildlife. I do find that you need to keep it at f8 or more (light permitting) to keep it sharp and to avoid some Purple Fringing. You've done very well with the blue tit shot in that regard

I really like the bird shot. As a former cat owner - I really adore those animals. Very good eye details.

Wonder to part with my FAJ 75-300 to get this Sigma instead.

Wold probably cost me a few £'s .....hmm

We sold our FAJ 75-300mm to someone on this forum, but found that we missed it and ended up buying another one. Not a good plan.

What I like about the FAJ lens is the close focusing. This makes it possible to make images of small flowers, for example, from a relatively distant viewpoint. However, close focusing indeed because 1.4m is an incredible magnification for a lens that would be a 450mm-equivalent on film.

It's not as crisp as some other lenses, but it is sharp and has a nice feel to the right sort of images.

That's my biggest concern.

I use it for wildlife or "zoo" shots mostly. Sometimes I feel the shotst are not crisp enough.

First, thank you all for the nice comments to my pictures.

Second, the Sigma has a macro function, magnification is 1:2 at 0.95 m distance. I haven't put it to a real test yet, may come up with some examples in the near future. Close-ups of flowers should be no problem.

I second Clarky's comment about good value for your money.
