Fortnightly Competition - Do we want it?

Sounds like common sense to be Barrie. My gut feeling is that if your suggestions are accepted and the competition run this way there will be many more entries received. I for one would do my best to enter.

Fine as it goes, however suggest addition to 9. Should the latest winner be unavailable then the runner-up will undertake selecting the next theme and judging its winning entries instead.

This should help make it clearer that there is a need to select three winning entries just in case the winning entrant is indisposed.

Also, just to be clear (and call me pedantic if you wish:wink if a suitable image is taken by chance on the first of the month, and the competition is set on the second, is that image eligible for entry? As written above it reads that it is.

Perhaps the overseer for that month could post frequent bumps to remind everyone that the competition is running and it is now in the gallery. I'm sure after a month you'd get used to its new location and look there as a matter of course, if just to look at what others had entered.

The gallery also allows one to view the images at a larger size and the image hosting is done on the site helping those who do not have other hosting facilities.

Maybe if not too onerous, the mods could make the monthly discussion thread a sticky and we have a link at the top (after the rules) linking to the comp in the gallery.
Lurking is shirking.!

I have a couple of concerns about the gallery competition section:

1) Is it capable of running more than one competition at once?

2) The wording at top of the gallery competition section suggests that the competitions are tied to a period of a single week. Is it possible to define other periods, like monthly?

I have a vague memory that we did have an extra, special, competition at one point so 1 above is probably plausible but I am not so sure about 2.

Me thinks some testing will be required.

On a separate issue we really like the judge to write a comment about each entry, even if it is just a single sentence. Should this be added to the rules?

Glyn

P.S. The extra competition was the "Pentax User meet competition" between weekly competitions #96 & #97 but retained the weekly duration, 9th - 16th May 2009.

Several people have already said they are daunted by judging, they know the precedents and I'm sure will do their best. If we get no comments perhaps the entrants can all pitch in and provide the commentary.

From comments some people have made it seems that having to upload images to hosting sites is a bar to entering. Moving the Comp. to the gallery removes that bar.

I think your first point is valid and could be accommodated, then what happens if all three dip out. Would it give the impression of " oh i don't need to bother 2nd place will do it"

Second point, I refer you to the second sentence of rule 1. "In practice from when the theme is set by the previous winner."

I'm lead to believe the site can cope with the proposed rules within it's systems.

It's all starting to sound very complicated. I'll wait until the dust settles ( and my photography improves ) I will still do the weekly when I get what I think is an image within the context of the set subject.

Actually Stan what's proposed is more like the weekly, only you take your image while the comp is running, that's all.

But the devil is in the details eg. winner picks next subject or second place or third place., how long before the subject is set by whoever and a week could be lost while waiting to see what the subject is so it becomes a 3 week competition. In theory, practice and theory are the same. In practice they seldom are.

I don't think you can prescribe, to a great extent, the amount of work a judge has to do. From my experience of both the weekly and fortnightly competitions most judging is up to a standard set by precedence.

Exactly as in the weekly

If someone is indisposed it's a bit more serious than dipping out! Each case on its merits though.

Quote:
1. Each monthly competition will nominally start on the first day of each calendar month. In practice from when the theme is set by the previous winner
.

That remains contradictory. I do not see why a July 2012 entry taken on the 1st July 2012 need be disallowed, even if taken before the comp was announced, it complies with the first part of rule 1 and it's hardly dipping back 40 years in the back catalogue! However, if that is generally considered unacceptable then the first part of rule 1 needs deleting.
