Using older manual glass the shoot - check histogram - adjust - reshoot is pretty much a necessity. With "easy" lighting they can be as much as 2EV over exposed if stopped down, with difficult lighting it can obviously go horribly wrong.

I have my camera set so that when you turn it off everything resets itself (i.e., bracketing, EV compensation ISO etc.) and sometimes it is quicker to flick the camera off and on again than manually reset it all.

Best wishes, Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

I chimp all the time! More often with the Sigma 10-20 than other lenses, and often when using flash. If I'm using the Sigma and flash I chimp every shot

Is there any reason you switch the screen off? is it just to avoid the glare in your eyes?

Like Kris I also have my camera to reset everything when you turn it on. Been caught out too many times by EV being left to +2 from a previous shoot!

I liked the second and fifth shots the most, which just goes to show how subjective it is looking at photgraphs! I like the different patterns of the second shot, and the strong graphic shapes of the boardwalk in the fifth shot with the stones adding some texture.

I have never heard the expression "chimp" before? Where does it come from? I don't do it as often as I should I think. I also like the idea of the camera resetting every time I switch it off, will have to do thet methinks.

I've been following the efforts of a group trying to preserve the harbour railway as the "Remembrance Line" although I'm not sure how successful they'll be. By the sounds of it the developers want the land, and that generally means that a group trying to save some of the history of the area stand no chance.

I went down there a few times in the mid 1990s during family summer holidays, bought my K1000 on one of those trips although I don't think it came from anywhere in Folkestone. The ferry port and railway were still active then although rather faded. If you look on Google Earth the ferry linkspan has been removed, meaning that chances of any operator wanting to re-open the link and thereby bring a few jobs and some economic life to the area are slim in the extreme.

I do check after I take the shot and normally do delete but I just loved the composistion of that shot and by time I changed settings the man had gone and there was no one around thats why I tried to rescue it I will have another go at it in PP though.

I don't know the origins, but I first heard it used on Strobist.

I have the screen off because I don't want it on. Saves batteries, and is just less annoying for me than when it is on. If I want to check a photo I'll look at it, but otherwise I am happy not to.
I have seen a lot of good shots missed by chimpers, including professionals.
