Focus Ring

I have a Tamron 90mm Macro lens that I bought off Ebay a few weeks ago and am getting fairly good results with it now (IMO). It has the "A" setting (using a Adaptall 2 pka mount) and is the previous version to the AF model.

My problem is that the focus ring is loose and not at all as stiff as my other manual focus lenses, it's nothing at all to worry about but I would like to tighten it if at all possible.

Can it be easily done?

Thanks.

I've never tried taking that particular lens apart but I have taken quite a few other lenses apart over the years and find the word "easy" is something I'd rarely associate with the task.

I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from a bit of DIY maintainence (if you're the sort of person who enjoys puzzles then it's actually good fun!) but I wouldn't suggest starting with a lens that you actually want to keep - find something old, obscure and fungus ridden for a few pennies and practice on that first.

You'll need some basic tools which I'd say should consist of lens rings (like these), a good quality size 0 philips screwdriver (not the rubbish ones that come in cheap toolkits), very fine nosed anti-magnetic tweezers and a spanner wrench set (something like this but you'll probably find cheaper ones will do the trick - or cheat like I do and grind down the pins on some circlip pliers to make blades ).

Best of luck!

Ok, thanks for the info.

Second question then, can anyone recommend a shop that will service the lens for me

Everyone has their personal preferences, but I have that lens and I agree that it is, not loose as such, but very light to focus. I find it's really useful for rapidly refocusing when hot on the trail of a bee. In fact, I'd say the Tamron has the sweetest action of any of the 15 lenses I've owned (including 12 Pentaxes).

Of course, you may just find it insecure or annoying - you may even have a faulty lens.

Well after 3 weeks of constant use I can say .. you are totally correct.
I wouldn't change the action of the ring one bit, I can actually focus it with my little finger while propped on a wall holding the camera in one hand and the front of the lens in the other.
It's much much better than the vivitar 100mm which I hardly use as I find the focus too stiff now

Bet you're glad you didn't try taking it apart now then...
