Flickr not working

Something rather strange is happening here in Colombo today. While my internet connection is working better than usual (none of the usual interruptions to BBC radio), I cannot access my Flickr account (or any Flickr page) which is described as unavailable.

Can anyone offer any explanation? The Sri Lankan government doesn't have a good track record regarding freedom of information, but I can't imagine they'd target Flickr (the BBC would be more likely, surely). It's mostly elimination of pesky local journalists they go in for, not internet censorship in any case. So I guess it's something technical but I can't imagine what.

No idea - I can see your Flickr pages just fine.

Do you use a Mac? If so fire up Network Utilities (in your Apps/Utilities folder), choose the 'traceroute' tab, and plug in 'flickr.com'. This will give you some clues as to where the connection is being lost. (All it will give you is the name of the last server in the chain, but that should be enough to see if the connection is being blocked inside Sri Lanka or not).

Not sure how to accomplish that on a PC, but I presume you can download some free traceroute software from somewhere.

I'm on a PC, Tim. Will take a look for traceroute software, though being something of a technophobe I was hoping there might be some straightforward explanation!

It's just started working again (after not having done so all day). Very strange! They must have removed the candid shots of President Rajapaksa!

To run from Windows, select "Start" then "Run" Type "cmd". This will open a DOS Window. Type into the Window "tracert www.whatever" where whatever is the url you want to trace, then press "Return".

Ahh, so that's how you do it. I've tried several times to open a dos window and type traceroute blahblahblah, but it never works! Should have remembered the stupid 8 character limit
