I have a Pentax AF200FG which I bought SH for £60. It works fine with my Kr and my older K200D so am sure it will be fine with your Kx.
It is a definate step up from the in-camera flash but does not have a swivel head.
Alternativley I understand Metz do one of about £60-£70

I have Metz Mecablitz 50 AF-1. It's not particularly cheap, but sheaper than Pentax flashes.

What are you looking for in a flash (obviously apart from a bright light source)?

Are things like P-ttl important to you?

If you're happy to use manual then Yongnuo are worth looking at...
If you're wanting to do anything with off-camera flash using triggers then you'll be working whichever flash you get in manual anyway...

The 2 I use are:

YN560... can be found for around £50... Fully manual, powerful, easy to use flash...

Vivitar 285hv... New and delivered for £70ish from the states... 2nd hand for much less (check voltages on older ones!!)... Fully manual... VERY easy operation (although less control)... No swivel function though (but if it's for off-camera use that really doesn't matter)

I believe Gadget Infinity now do a P-ttl flash (cactus) in a pentax-fit for around £100 but there have been a few reports of failure so QC may be (or have been) an issue... (though at that price I'm tempted to try one myself)
........................................................................
Digital:
Pentax K5- Vivitar 19mm 3.8; FA35mm f2; D-Xenon 100mm macro f2.8; DA50-200mm WR...
Flash:
Yongnuo YN-560; Vivitar 285HV; Cactus V4 triggers...
Film:
Pentax-MX & M50mm f1.4; Spottie & 55mm f1.8; MG & M40mm 2.8...

For such price it's worth to try find AF360FGZ second hand. Maybe it's not the most powerfull one but it's proper p-TTL with HSS and quality build is very good.

I have a Metz 48 AF-1 which is a very good value flash. Tilt/swivel head, P-TTL, wireless slave etc. Only negative is that it's a bit cryptic to set up so I've stuck a label on the top of mine to remind me what all the stuff on the LCD means!
