First practice shots with the Bigma

You have done a lot better than I did when I first had my Bigma, my shots were almost totally chuck shots. You do seem to be missing the sharp focus and I would suggest you pull back a bit to say 450 or 480 to get the best in clarity.
Of course, a tripod helps a lot as does good light and a subject that stands still, I made the mistake of first trying in December with small birds and thought there was something wrong with the lens, there wasn't it was just me.

Well on the sharp focus. I am trying out a number of things because I feel like it isn't as sharp as it should be. I will do some tests this weekend and otherwise I am going to contact the shop or Sigma.
I know the focus can be adjusted mechanically on the Bigma by slightly moving the rear element.

Don't be too quick you sound just like me a month ago and now I am delighted, it is a lens that takes some getting used to but when you do it is nice and crisp and lovely soft backgrounds with, what is it called, quality bokeh

But if I compare it to my DA50-200 at 50 and 200mm the DA is quite a bit sharper.

Looks like a good lens, hopefully you can get the 50mm sorted out.
How is the weight of the thing, usable to take on a hike?
My trip don't go on today.. I'm now waiting till it rains to take some shots, they also predicted hail so wish me luck

Ok, I did the good 'ole newspaper test with the Bigma. As Thordell suggested it takes some practice. All of the shots below are images which I converted with Silkypix to 800px wide JPEG images. I used the natural fine sharpness setting in Silkypix as that is the one that I mostly use.
The first one is 50mm, the second 100, the third 200, etc towards 500mm
They were all shot using ISO100 and f10. The target was shot from a distance of 4 meters.

They were all shot out of my hand, I had to increase the contrast and the saturation a little because of the bright overcast.
The second one isn't completely in focus and/or suffers from a little camera shake. SR was on.
