Very nice photo. The affection is showing, which is good.
As you say yourself, the white shirt is burned out. This is almoat inevitable when shooting in direct sunlight, which also produces a strong shadow, hiding his eyes.
Try to do the shot in the shadow, or use a white reflector to lighten up the shadow.

Another technique (forgive me if you know this) is Fill-in Flash. It might sound strange, but if you use the flash you will remove the shadows under the eyes. Give it a try next time.
As for the shirt, just crop the photo to his face. Should be fine.

a diffuser between the sun and your subject (ie, a white or translucent shower curtian taped over a pvc (plumbing) pipe frame), held by a stand or assistant...
or a large reflector on the shadow side... lots of options for dealing with harsh light!

He was mid-play standing at the top of a slide when I took this shot (a 2 second pause before he hurled himself down it), so reflectors and diffusers would be a little difficult to organise!
Good call about the fill flash, didn't even occur to me! I was using the 135mm, so I guess I was about 4m away in strong sunlight - do you think that would make a difference? I don't have a dedicated flashgun.

Fill flash won't be any use with a shutter speed like 1/3000s though, standard synch speed is 1/180s, so you'd need an aperture of about f/16, which would ruin the nice, shallow depth of field. High speed fill flash is only available if you're using an AF360 or AF540 flashgun, as far as I'm aware.
Nice shot though, captures the moment, and I think it's technically as good as you would have got with your current gear and the situation you took it in.
Try a similar one in shade, see how it comes out.

My first photo post, so be gentle
This is of my son who's almost 3. Virtually all of my photos have the same subject!
Obviously he's the most gorgeous boy in the whole world , so critique away! I know his shirt is a bit overcooked, is there anything else I should be doing differently?
