So what would be a good and not too expensive starter M42 lens to have a delve into the back catalogue?

I've got my M42 adapter and I think I'm ready.

Any 90-120 ish macro lenses or a 30mm to 50mm would be interesting.

Thanks.

Thanks DrO,

Silly question, do any M42 lenses work or just the ones for Pentax?

Any will work. Tough the 'auto' aperture feature some M42 lenses have will not function. (It basically allows pre-selection of aperture, whilst the lens only actually shuts at the point of taking the photo).

If there is no auto/manual switch and if you don't mind taking the lens partialy apart then you can disable the auto mechanism. The with a suitable adapter it will work as per previous comments.

Or you can glue the pin in which renders the apeture 'manual'.
K10D, K5 plus plenty of clueless enthusiasm.

Just don't come back here though asking how you repair
damage to your camera by a bit of glue that fell off!

Best to go for SMC Taumars which will be easier to use. The SMC Taumar 28mm f3.5 with its rectangular hood is a really great lens as is the 35mm f3.5. There is something remarkable about the colour rendition and contrast of the SMC Taumar wide angles.

Number one for me would be the Super Tak 55/1.8 followed by the SMC Tak 85/1.8

If you like macro, the Vivitar 55/2.8 macro is an excellent lens.
Pentax K10D + Vivitar 55/2.8 macro + Super Takumar 55/1.8 + SuperMultiCoated Takumar 85/1.8 + SuperMultiCoated Takumar 135/3.5 + SuperMultiCoated Takumar 200/4 + Super Takumar 300/4
Pentax K100D + DA18-55ALII + DA55-300
Pentax K5 + FA31Ltd + M50/1.7 + DFA100WR + M120/2.8 (+ DA18-55WR at occasion)

The 50 f2 taks are OKas well.

If you get chance, the Carl Ziess 35 and 50 lenses have auto/manual switches and can be sold on when you've had enough fun.
Cheers, HG

K110+DA40, K200+DA35, K3 and a bag of lenses, bodies and other bits.

Mustn't forget the Zenits, or folders, or...

I will second Ken with the S-M-C Takumar 28mm f/3.5. It is a lovely lens and relatively plentiful/cheap on sleazebay.
