A bit of sun this morning, albeit briefly, brought out my first hoverflies this year.

That looks like a type of hoverfly to me. Harmless creature with bigger wings and longer bodies so often mistaken as wasps.

I'd say wasp, but it's not very big

Definitely hoverflies, honest

They are obviously doing their mimicking job well. They might look large, but are half the size of a wasp. These were on a dandelion head, for scale.

I was using the 50mm and teleconverter so was only a few cm from the insects. I wouldn't have got that close to a wasp

Apparently you can tell a wasp by the long antenna, pinched waist and the fact that when they are sitting their wings go completely back (3 & 4).

Anyway .. bit late now as it's probably back in the wasp nest (or should that be hoverfly nest?)

They also sting

Great photos anyway .. whatever it is.

Would love to have seen a closeup of those eyes.

I've never seen Hoverflies with antenna like that, I've just done a search on wasp mimicking hoverflies and can't find anything that remotely resembles it.

Have a look here link second and third images compare a Common Wasp and the Chrysotoxum Hoverfly (the one that is supposed to mimic the Wasp.

Cracking shots though

It is definitely not a Common Wasp, although I don't know exactly what it is. Wasps do not have eyes like this insect's and they also have completely different mouthparts.

It may be a more uncommon species of wasp, but is more likely to be a fly. Can Charlotte help?

Not hoverflies then, apparently.

Another quick look suggests they might be Cuckoo Wasps - Vespula austriaca?

Much smaller than wasps, less than half the size and certainly no sting. Dozens of the little chaps mooching about on the dandelions.

This might give a better idea of scale.

If it's sunny tomorrow I'll try again for an eye closeup!

I can't see the mouth parts properly on these pics so wouldn't like to comment but as for the eyes .. here is a shot I took a few years ago .. not exactly the same but close (never seen one similar since) and that was definitely a wasp

It looks like a Nomada (Nomad bee) don't ask me which one though there are about 30 different types.

I took a photo of a similar looking one a month or so ago - it didn't have the yellow markings on its shoulders though.

I've uploaded a couple of photos of it to the gallery so I don't spoil your thread Chris.

Kind regards
Charlotte
