He is not happy with it.
from Photozone:
"Verdict
It is difficult to find a final verdict for the Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM. On the one hand it has some obvious problems like a weak border performance at max. aperture and very pronounced lateral chromatic aberrations (CAs). On the other hand it is really very sharp and contrasty at medium aperture settings (f/5.6- and many users may actually forgive the border problems at f/2.8 because you either stop down for conventional photography or rely on the (very sharp) center for shallow depth-of-field situations (e.g. portraits) anyway. The build quality of the lens is also a step up from the consumer grade Pentax lenses and the silent (although not overly speedy) SDM is an extra bonus on top. The pricing of the Pentax 16-50mm f/2.8 is fair relative to its performance and build quality".
I didn't really use mine too much to say it's a great lens or to say it has faults. Focus was slow on my K10 and I thought it a little better on my K7. No doubt faster still on a K5. The range of the lens was what drew me to it.
This Sigma is impressive and fast focus on my K7, much faster than my 16-50 SDM.
I'll be out over this weekend and give it some use in strong sunlight (inc. direct sun in frame), so I'll get a more realistic idea of how it stands up to real day to day work.
This also from this forum (before I joined).

I think the less you read, and less you know, the easier the choices get. Ignorance is bliss.
However, another cheer for the kit lens.
I guess the Sigma is not WR.
To be fair, the review is 2 years old and he references that he may have had a poor copy. But with the recent K-5 issues Pentax QC needs taking to the next level.

Sigma is not WR but to be honest, I tend not to live and work where it rains much. Its 38'C outside with an all blue sky. I think the less you read, and less you know, the easier the choices get. Ignorance is bliss.

Yes the number of times a year I need WR can be counted on the fingers of one finger.
