First Efforts with K5

I took the K5 and Bigma out today, I wanted to see how high ISO would affect feather detail.

Both these were taken with the camera in TAv set at 1/500th and f8, both have been run through Neat Image using "Auto" (note that it has done this without the Noise Profiles for a K5), and I think its done a pretty good job,

Both shots have had adjustment of levels and sharpening applied in PS. the Robin is about 1/2 the frame and the Chaffinch about 2/3rd

Now for the fun bit, the Robin was ISO 2200 and the Chaf ISO 1600

These are very fine images demonstrating how useable the high ISO settings are on the K-5.

The robin does look very soft, I was assuming it was a 100% crop. Bit too strong with the Neat Image?

The Chaffinch is better, though!

Which setting did you have the AF placed? -10 - +10, position wise?

The chaffinch is extraordinary, considering the "film" speed you used, Alan.

This wonderful camera's set to make all others obsolete in low-light situations. And I don't just mean Pentax cameras...
Best wishes,

Andrew

You finally managed to convince the wife then! The K5 is a great camera, your images show how good ISO is in real photographic terms. What focal length is your Bigma by the way?

I wonder how many people at your club will switch to Pentax when they start to see the images you will be taking!

IF you mean focus point its always on centre, I focus and recompose, if you mean adjustment I haven't done any adjustments yet. The robin shot has the left of the image cropped, its about half size of original.
This was handheld so there could be some camera shake in there too, I know its not anywhere near perfect (or remotely good) but I posted it to show the capabilities of the K5.

I am quite pleased with the Chaf. I doubt I will shoot much above 1600 but that is still giving me at least couple more stops of light to play with, I always liked to keep the K20D to 400 if I could. I did even get the Bigma to f16 today but I'd be happy with f8 and the K5 looks like its the camera to do it with,

The "Bigma" is a common nick-name for the Sigma 50-500, these were shot at 500.

Probably not many, I've already got better than this with the K10&20D, and theyre all locked into their own systems anyway

Gosh - top notch high ISO performance (not bad shots either:wink. I find I am using ISO800 almost as default at this time of year on the K7 (especially as I am normally out pretty early), and having to use a fair old slug of noise reduction in PP... I don't like to go much above ISO800, but it does mean I'm rarely creeping above f5... I rather covet a K5, just need to find a grand down the back of the sofa...

Nice shots

Neat image is pretty good but the shots show a lot of promise for the K5.
K10D, K5 plus plenty of clueless enthusiasm.

Great pictures Alan, they demonstrate just how far you can push the K5 - in terms of long lenses and high ISO.
