Firmware upgrade error

Hi,
Fresh member here...

While upgrading the firmware on my K-5II from 1.00 to 1.07, the message "ERROR" appeared at the bottom left of the screen, and the progressbar indicating the upgrade-progression froze. Afraid to mess things up, I let the camera sit like that for an hour, but nothing more happened. After another hour of nothing happening, I decided to turn the thing off.

Now the camera is completely dead. Anyone have any idea of how to reinitialize or somehow get the camera working again?

Any help greatly appreciated!

I would only suggest what I suspect you have done already ....remove the battery and SD card. Let the camera sit for 5 minutes then put the battery back in.

If you have no luck then I am afraid your camera will have to go back to Pentax to have the software re-installed.

Was the battery fully charged when doing the update ?

I started on a full battery, yep. Yeah, it does, sadly, appear that I'll have to take it to Pentax to have it fixed there. *sigh* To think I did this with no good reason to actually do the upgrade.

Rightly or wrongly, I always think upgrades are a tricky moment when things can go very wrong, especially with computers but also with cameras. Unfortunately sometimes they need to be done and it's the only way in the long term.

Fingers crossed that your camera can be restored.
Best regards, John

I've done firmware updates on several cameras and every time sat on the edge of my seat, it's high time manufacturers offered recovery software in the event of what is essentially a computer crash.

Fingers crossed the recovery isn't too costly for you.

How long have you owned the camera? I suggest your first port of call to be the retailer and tell them what happened. A good one will argue the case on your behalf.

No worries. I have sent the camera off to the Pentax-dealer to see if they can restore it.
I bought the camera used, only had it two days. oh well.
Lovely camera though! Hopefully it will be back in not too long!

Proves what I have started to think, computers are not fit for purpose!

I was thinking the same as I pushed the “update”-button. Unfortunately, I still pushed it.

You didn't by chance download and attempt to install the K5iis firmware on a K5ii or the k5ii version on a K5iis ? They're not the same!

Not correct I'm afraid. They're the same according to the Ricoh site.

Don't be so sure! Why do Ricoh show two different downloads then?

[K-5II]

For Windows : k5_2_107.exe 10,134Kbytes, LHA type, self-extracting files
For Windows/Macintosh : k5_2_107.zip 10,064Kbytes, zip type

[K-5IIs]

For Windows : k5_2s107.exe 10,134Kbytes, LHA type, self-extracting files
For Windows/Macintosh : k5_2s107.zip 10,064Kbytes, zip type

Or maybe I need a new pair specs or someone does?

Perhaps you'd have had the same issue as the OP if you had attempted an update.

Just as a matter of interest, did you try downloading the update file again and installing it from a different card?
