You didn't by chance download and attempt to install the K5iis firmware on a K5ii or the k5ii version on a K5iis ? They're not the same!
Not correct I'm afraid. They're the same according to the Ricoh site.
Don't be so sure! Why do Ricoh show two different downloads then?

[K-5II]

For Windows : k5_2_107.exe 10,134Kbytes, LHA type, self-extracting files
For Windows/Macintosh : k5_2_107.zip 10,064Kbytes, zip type

[K-5IIs]

For Windows : k5_2s107.exe 10,134Kbytes, LHA type, self-extracting files
For Windows/Macintosh : k5_2s107.zip 10,064Kbytes, zip type

Or maybe I need a new pair specs or someone does?

Perhaps you'd have had the same issue as the OP if you had attempted an update.
By bad.

As a matter of interest, just how does one upgrade the firmware?

isn't it time that Ricoh sorted out direct dowload from site to camera without faffing about formatting cards and saving files.

And if there's a glitch at their end while downloading to camera and the camera is bricked as a result? I bet their lawyers have worked out the implications...

But a 'recover from failed update' function that works with the current method should be possible, even if it couldn't cover all possible causes of failure.

The only storage on a camera is the buffer. I don’t know if this would be capable of holding the firmware update.
So even a download from the web would still need a formatted card to save the update to before installing.
Given that my iPhone has no problem doing this then it should not be too difficult to have some memory in the camera.

Now where did I put that lead to connect the camera to computer 😀😀

The safest way is follow the instructions that go with it.

Peter, i only ever transfer images to computer through a wired connection, 3 cameras each with their own transfer lead permanently connected to computer as they all have different transfer ports. Firmware for the Oly comes direct from site through their packaged software which made me think Ricoh could do the same for my 2 Pentax.
