Well the firmware update is in and all appears to be ok. Just waiting to see what SRS has to say on the matter. Never had issues with my previous pentax models and so it seems strange that the method should be so different with the K3. Tried retirement at 55 and got bored and took up a new challenge with a career in training - ITC would you believe. So now, this June this will be a second retirement! I want too hope to concentrate on my photography. I may take in RIAT at Fairford this year as there are plenty of photo opportunities there...
As for the "Root" directory - just format the sd card and then copy the firmware file over to the card. As there are no other files or directories on the disk, the upgrade file will be on the Root i.e D - E - F or whatever your next free disk letter is assigned by your pc when you insert the sd card

It isn't any different to updating other Pentax DSLRs. The K-5 was just the same - press menu while you turn the camera on and it asks if you want to update it. What is different is that if there isn't a bin file on the SD card it doesn't show the firmware version now, you have to get it from a menu option instead (same as the Q.)Never had issues with my previous pentax models and so it seems strange that the method should be so different with the K3.
Possibly what didn't help is that the instructions on how to update it was missing from the Ricoh/Pentax UK download page and wasn't included with the download (though the main jp site did show that information.)

The firmware update on the K-3 is different to that on the K-5, but it is not complex at all. Simply copy the firmware file to the SD card (same as all other Pentax DSLR's) then switch the camera on and press the Menu button. In the menu there is a firmware option, select this and follow the instructions to complete the update.
This is a very simple process and is the same as that on the K-01; Pentax seem to have moved the firmware update into a menu option on their latest cameras which to me is a good move as it avoids having to remember to press the Menu button whilst turning the camera on. A menu option is much easier for everyone to understand.

Maybe I did it without thinking but that's not what it says in the instruction information given (I saved the instructions at the time I downloaded it.)

I put my card in one slot and it didn't work so put it in the other and hey it worked just fine

I did it this way ^ At first the upgrade would not start because it didn't think there was enough battery power so charged it a bit and followed these instructions. I put the card in slot one pressed menu and switched on, the firmware upgrade started automatically and didn't take long to complete.

Isn't it the case that the K3 can only update via 1 of the 2 card slots, no.1 I think? Similar situation to the FluCard will only fully function in one of the slots, not both?

Good, glad you got it sorted. I've never done RIAT so might try it myself or is it Farnborough this year? I can never remember - do they alternate? I can recommend the Waddington air show as I've done that on several occasions. The City of Lincoln is of course very close and worth a stay - nice cathedral as well!
