Get it from here link
The file is an EXE under windows if that's the problem you can also click on MAC that on is packed as ZIP
All you need to do is
- unpack the file
- format the card
- place the file fwdc204b.bin route directory of the SD/SDHC card.
- turn on the camera

If I recall, once you have the new firmware file on the root directory of the SD card, you then have to hold down the menu key of the camera with the card in it as you turn it on, then it will automatically bring up the firmware update menu. Make sure you have plenty of charge in your battery as if it conks out half way through then I have no idea what you do then (except maybe phone pentax:shock

Thanks, Stefan, but I am seriously inexpert in computer-speak and computer-do, and despite your advice I am still not sure how to proceed :
I download the update file and I am then told I have chosen to open the file K7_e102w.exe. and asked if I would like to save this file. A window opens asking me to choose between save file and cancel, so I click save, and then a window opens called the INSTALL DIRECTORY. I click OK on that, but nothing further appears on my screen .
I presume the file is waiting somewhere, but I don't know how or where to find it, in order to go further :.
Referring to your message, the file is presumably unpacked and lying in my computer, but how do I find it?

Thanks to you too, Mat. But I am appallingly ignorant in relation to the terminology (eg "..... the new firmware file on the root directory of ...). Can you explain in the most basic terms what root directory means, or how I can get at it!

Don't know if it helps but... when I downloaded the firmware update I ended up with a file called 'FWDC204B.BIN' along with a 'read-me' txt file. I then drag the FWDC204B.BIN file onto the SD card in my camera using the USB cable, making sure that it sits at the very root of the card. Then once that is done, I turn the camera on whilst holding down the menu button and then up comes the option on the camera to update the firmware. If you are looking for the .bin file on a windows machine, you might be able to search (using 'find') for *.bin files and see if you can find it that way (it's a long time since I used a windows PC). If you are using a mac then I expect the file will be in your downloads folder...
Apologies if this doesn't help...

Thanks again, Matt . I had actually done a "search" for the file specified by name in the support page instructions, and it did not show up. Similarly, I've just searched for " *. bin " without success! Weird.... Never mind- I'll get on the blower to Pentax in the morning, and ask for a mug's guide to the update process. I'll post the outcome in case there are other simpletons like me who are easily bamboozled!

The .BIN file is packed inside the file you downloaded.
Since you know zip click on the link, it's a zip file with what you need. link
When you unpack it you will have FWDC204B.BIN file inside the map.
Copy that to the root of the SD card like Mat said and follow the rest of his instructions.
I hope that helped, there is no easier way to explain it really...

Duncan, did you succeed?

Yes . The 2 files were downloaded onto my computer easily from http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k-7_s.html , following the instructions on the support page. It was the next step that gave me the problem, but eventually I found the downloaded files by going to the Start programme, opened "my computer" > "local disk" > "users" > "administrator" > "downloads" and there were the 2 files, "readme.txt" (which contains the procedure in detail), and "Fwdc204b.bin" (which is the updated firmware). Then it was just a matter of copying the update file onto a SD card, and thence into the camera.
The procedure, as explained in the readme file, was to right click on the updated firmware file to copy it, insert a formatted SD card into my computer's SD slot, again go to "my computer" and right click to paste the copied file onto the "removable disk D:" in the column on the right of the page.
The card had then to be taken out and loaded into the K7, and it was a simple matter then, following the readme.txt instructions, to complete the installation of the updated firmware.

so I clicked "ok", and then..... nothing happened. Where should I be looking for the presumably unzipped file? I assume that only after that do I connect the camera to my computer...
