Jason - it does not include the older Firmware but is an update to it. Why would it need the older firmware?

The new version will normally include changes included in previous updates, but could actually remove some functionality too.

Because there were features in the older updates that they were not changing, which is what I was told when I rang up to find out where I could get the old updates from. They said it includes the old updates plus any changes that have been made.

Precisely ... it includes updates from previous releases NOT the complete firmware release.

On the K20D, you can install an earlier version than you currently have installed of the firmware if you want to. That suggests to me that the "updates" are in fact whole firmware programs.

The firmware is actually a computer program. It is easier to replace a whole program than to patch one.

The point is: New version DO NOT include the old version.

And the answer given by Jason is wrong.

What the OP was trying to ask is if he needs to do a incremental upgrade or if he can upgrade to the latest version at once.
The anwser ofcourse is that you only have to install the latest one because any modifications done in earlier versions are allso in the latest one.

The new version includes content from the old version (the parts of which that are the same) if each version is in fact a whole firmware program - which I reckon it is.

Which is what I was saying before polchraine started getting carried away, he does not need to download the other updates, FACT. So the answer given by me is not wrong, so before you go saying people are incorrect check your facts and information. If you don't belive me just check with customer services like I did.

You obviously know very little about software and cannot accept you were WRONG.

Your answer effectively stated that the new firmware contains the older firmware which it does not. In your latest post you claimed that your original answer was totally different to what you said. You did NOT say in your original answer that the OP did not need to download the other updates.

The newest firmware release does NOT contain the older firmware release - it contains same/similar functionality and any updates that have been developed.

If each update contained the previous version too, the size would grow very rapidly.

I did not get carried away but corrected what was a wrong answer given to the OP.

When you understand delivery of software updates and patches, then you may be able to comment.
