I did wonder if the engines would look better in monochrome but, as you say, the colours are so vivid. A bit like using Fuji Velvia...if you can remember that!

Of course, Roger. We praise the lens, the sensor, the quality of light, even, on occasions the photographer, but forget Who pulls the whole thing together! There's actually no need for the ferns to look as lovely as that!

The Fern is great, there are so many of those here but I've yet to capture one as well as this Andrew.
A bit OT - Hunslet 0-6-0s were used here on the timber tramways (pre-Pentax days of course). There's very little left of them or the infrastructure on which they worked now unfortunately. Bushfires have accounted for the majority of it, and engines were scrapped.
Some of the other locos that used to work the extensive timber tramways in the Victorian Alps were:
Fowler 2-4-0s & 0-4-2s
Beyer-Peacock 0-4-0s & 2-6-0s
Baldwin 0-4-0 Saddletanks, 2-4-0s, 2-6-0s & 4-6-0s
Shay (no details ?)
Kerr-Stuart 0-4-0
Krauss 0-4-0
You may be more fortunate in having better preserved railways and engines elsewhere, and come across some of these names.

Lovely shots... back on familiar ground with 5 & 6! 7 is nicely composed and the fen looks as soft as a kitten's paw (but sharp photographically - wonder which lens you used here).
Uncoiling ferns always remind me of fractals link... a few simple mathematical rules producing complex results with the illusion of design.

Thanks for the details about the engines used in Australia. We are lucky in having so much preserved steam in these islands, I suppose being slow to adapt an d take on new ideas, paradoxically has its advantages.

I took only my old Clubman 28mm mf. I quite like just restricting myself to one focal length although it does mean missing the odd shot.the fen looks as soft as a kitten's paw (but sharp photographically - wonder which lens you used here).
