Thanks again for all the advice.
Having looked through all the pictures I have taken over the past five years with various bridge cameras etc I can see the need for the 300mm lens as there were a good number of images over 200mm that were more than useable.
Having looked at the various online shops I have settled with SRS as they are offering what I think is a steal on teh K5-IIs.
K5-II with the 18-135mm kit is £1039
K5-IIs with the 18-135mm (lens split from the above kit so unboxed) is £1199
Everywhere else is wanting over several hundred more for the K5-IIs with that lens.
Roll on Thursday.

Well thats the purchase done, thanks again for your help and advice.
Just spoke to a very helpful gentlemen at SRS and a K5-IIs with the 135 lens is on its way along with a kenko filter.
Had another bill this month so the other 55-300 will need to wait till next month.

My own choice this month was the K5 and Sigma 18-250, as originally suggested. The 18-250 (non-OS) is actually smaller and lighter than the Sigma 17-70 OS that it's replacing. To me it's a no-brainer: all my basic everyday needs in one lens: and anyway, I much prefer the in-camera IS. The lens is a bit slower than the 17-70, but the quality of the K5 sensor and its useable ISO range mean this is no longer an issue.
I have a serious shake (Parkinson's), but with this combination I'm taking pin-sharp pics, hand-held at the 250 end, in low light. Brilliant!
