Film developing and scanning to CD

Check with Jessops and Snappy Snaps to see what the native resolution is of their scanning equipment. What ever you do, DON'T have them processed and scanned in a supermarket such as ASDA, TESCO, etc!! Last time I got some negs scanned to disc at ASDA (I knooooooow!!...) the image scans were about 600 x 400 pixels!!???.....

Thanks. I'll check. Sadly some of these places scan the images well and then ruin the image with masses of sharpening and then sometimes over compress the jpegs too!

I know Max Spielmann still process 35mm films and will scan them to CD. They have quite a few stores around so you can take them in rather than post them. Not the best quality but pretty cheap from what I recall - I have used them to process films that I have run through old Pentax SLRs for testing. They provide high res and low res images on the CD. If there are any your relative wants higher quality prints from you can always get the negatives re-scanned / printed at a more upmarket establishment who may even be able to do some colour correction.

If you get the pics scanned as 1 roll of 35mm to 1 cd, a 36-exposure should allow the shop to scan each pic so that the individual jpeg size is around 15 Mb. A standard cd-rom is about 700 Mb, so divide this figure by the no. of exposures on a roll. 15 Mb should be pretty much adequate for getting good resolution. I can't remember the precise calculation, but if the image size is 4000 x 3000 pixels and each file is 15 Mb, then (I'm guessing here) the resolution is likely to be around the 300-400 pixels/inch mark (but don't quote me on that! )

I've always had good service from Photographique in Bristol. They aren't the absolute cheapest place, but if they are rolls with sentimental value, then I'd definitely be thinking of trusting them to someone really good and not just cheap!

Some high street developers will fob you off with low resolution, heavily compressed scans (thinking of Snappy Snaps here...)

Expensive but good quality labs include The Darkroom UK and Peak Imaging. They may well adjust developing a little if you let them know the circumstances of the film storage etc. Their lo-res scans are good, but high res are expensive.

Over many years I have learnt that the 'General Public' do not hold photography in very high priorty -- they will pay anything asked by Plumbers and Solicitors but if you say a Press Re-print is 4 shillings and sixpence they exclaim " WHAT -- all that just for a PHOTO ?? !! " -- then many years later when someone has died the FIRST thing they want is PHOTOS -- I had a man contact me about a photo I took for the Brentwood 'ARGUS' in 1973 asking if I still had the negative as his Son had died aged 42 and he was 14 when I took his photo and could I help -- well, all the 1973 negs had been dumped on the order of Wife No. 2 so I had to copy a 4/6d press re-print I had done -- it was all creased up -- they never look after their photos !

OK someone earlier said don't use ASDA....I use ASDA and get good results. You get two scans Hi Res and Lo Res...Hi Res are 1800 x 1200. At £2 per roll developing and 97p to scan to disc it's a bargain.
No I don't work at ASDA...in fact I work at one of their rivals....

Wow, that's extremely cheap. Most of the places I've seen online charge 7 quid minimum. I don't suppose ASDA will process "real" B&W films though, just C41.
