The USB cable seems like it's more cumbersome and then there's installation. I use the SC card reader because it's much faster.

I have always used the sd card in the computer but now I have a Mac the slot is stupidly around the back, so I thought I would try the USB cable instead. None of the cables in my oddments box had the right combination of connectors at each end so then I remembered the K50 came with a USB cable included. If the entry level body came with a cable how come one cannot be bundled with the K1? Anyhow, guess what, that didn't fit either! Different sockets in the cameras! Back to square one but with an sd card reader on a dongle so I can plug in without pulling the computer around.

I really like the USB2 extension cables that have a coloured LED on the end. Makes it easier to find and tells you if the computers connected to the mains. Also easier to see in the dark. My USB3 cables don't have them. I must see if they are available in USB3.

90% I transfer using wifi, eyefi card.. Very slow transfer, but I'm never in a rush.
I take the card out and plug directly into the computer when someone wants a quick copy for themselfs.

I've changed recently, from using the USB cable as I said earlier, to using a card reader. Twice as fast, so I'll stick with that for now.

SD card reader built in to the laptop. I've always used readers, and never allowed the PC to delete on import after losing some pics once.

My MacBook has an SD card build in, so I don't need to carry extra accessories for that. You save more time, instead of waiting while the files are uploaded to your computer.

Don't use Eye-Fi Cards via built in readers. It uses a higher current and can burn them out. That's why Eye-Fi supply a HD reader with their cards and is the only reader that should be used. It's a bit on the slow side though so use another reader for faster cards.

On the basis that on a day's shoot I always have to change cards because one is full, I use the SD card readers on my desktop and laptops. If I am downlowding from a CF card out of the D810 - I will use the card reader (a HAMA) for any SD cards out of the K-1/K-3 or the Nikons as well. However, using the D500 is another matter as the XQD cards require their own card reader, and if you slot that directly into the computer it blocks access to the other USB and SD slots (I know you can get round that)...
I can't recall ever tethering any of my DSLRs to a computer.

I was using the Free version of the excellent Macrium Reflect to backup a partition yesterday over USB 3 At the beginning it said it would take 1hr 24min. It actually took about 10 seconds less
With internet downloads the servers often serve one group of clients for say 1 sec. them another group for another sec. and then return to the 1st group for a second. This is what Firefox doesn't take into account.
