No, not paranoid Richard. Modern lenses are far more complex than they were in the manual focus days, so failures of various components will occur.

In contrast to say an M series lens that is unlikely to suffer anything more than a sticky diaphragm, the modern lens may not be as collectable in another 40 years because of its complexity and the inability to provide electronic parts.

On the other hand in another 40 years I might not be particularly concerned about that.

One can see why the price of the M42 Takumars is going through the roof at the moment...

Well, my Sigma has been and gone - needless to say I didn't get a good one and the Sigmaitis (aka front focusing) was so bad even the K20D's AF adjust couldn't fix it . May just give up on this sub-2.0 business and get that 50 Macro SRS have on offer...
