The lens will work as a normal lens, ie the Power Zoom functions won't work but AF etc will.

I had one of those lenses and sold it to a K200D user, thinking Power Zoom would work on that camera just like it does on the K20D. Unfortunately, it does not. The lens can be zoomed manually though.

The FAJ 28-80mm delivers similar image quality while being a great deal smaller and lighter.

I thought the contacts inside the lens mount would power both SDM and the Power Zoom on the old FA lenses?

EDIT, according to Dimitrov's Pentax website the K200 DOES support power zoom

It may well power them but there's no provision in the camera's firmware to control their functions.

I thought that too, ISpi, and was so confident that I stated it as fact in my eBay listing. I was wrong. I don't know, or can't remember, why it doesn't work on that camera.

I was under the impression that the zoom switch was actually on the lens itself, and all it needs is power supplying to it..through the contacts inside the mount?

It works fine on my K10D, at least as far as power zooming goes. The other functions don't seem to be supported.

I was thinking about functions like size tracking which would be controlled by the camera itself? Never having owned one I'm prepared to be proved wrong.

No, it doesn't even power the zoom motor according to what my buyer told me and what I've read since.

I think Dimitrov is wrong on this occasion.

None of the digital cameras can control the fancy PZ functions, but the K20D and K10D can power the zoom motor. You control it by twisting the ring on the lens.

Interestingly, the camera also continuously actives the AF whilst zooming (even in AF-S mode), and also the lens retracts to its smallest size as the camera is switched off.

Without the fancy bits they don't sound like much of an advantage over a manual zoom then; I'm guessing they're comparatively heavy beasts too?

This one's quite heavy, yes (though I'm not sure the Power Zoom parts are much to blame for it). Also the motor consumes a lot of battery power, especially because you end up playing with it for the sake of it!

Well if one ever turns up at auction I'll have a play with it but I won't be putting one on Santa's list

Did you know that you have to slide the zoom ring backwards/forwards to engage/disengage the power zoom function. I can't remember which way is which but in one direction the words Power Zoom are revealed underneath the zoom ring.

If your camera body has the two internal SDM contacts inside the lens mount it should work.

The buttons work only with some of the Z series film bodies and din't even work on the MZ-S.
