F Numbers and Shutter Priority

This evening while trying out longer exposures I was using shutter priority at 3 seconds and the screen was showing I needed an apeture of f/40 which as far as I know isn't available on the lens I was using. Several other shots gave readings of f/29, f/34 etc. A photo was captured ok so is there some sort of wizardry at work or does the lens just go to f/22. Also could using the camera when these way out readings are showing cause damage to the camera and/or lens

I don't know the answers to your questions but to avoid the high f stops why don't you just UP/DOWN the ISO?

You really need to engage brain before making posts Stan, letting us know what lens was attached would help

If it was a Sigma or other third party lens then that may have something to do with it, the Sigma 50-500 for instance is supposed to have a max aperture of f6.3 at 500, but will never register below f6.7.

It could also be a fault with the electronics in the lens, even possibly dirty contacts, I would start with cleaning the contacts on both lens and body and then give the combo a thorough workout.

Another thought, did you have a third party grip attached?

K5 on a tripod with Pentax 18-135mm ISO 200 Tv 3" Filters (Kood) 1 x ND2 1 x ND4 (Unknown) 1 x ND4 in that order. The object of the exercise was to smooth out the waves and see how the time would affect the exposure. It was a beginners class run by a club member (Canon user)

The exif in this shot shows f/40 at 3 secs and photo shows a lucozade bottle in the bottom left which may or may not have contained a message
