Extreme Wide Angle wanted

Hiya, I'd like to have a go with an extreme wide angle lens, something in the order of a 4.5mm or similar, been looking for a while and whilst Sigma make a 4.5mm, it's not available in Pentax fit.

I've a Sigma 10-20 which is great and love the effect when wide, hence fancy going a tad wider, I know I won't use it all the time, but could justify the cost ..... almost to myself anyway.

I did have a Fish-eye adaptor some years back, which screwed onto the front of a 50mm, but the quality was fairly awful, so my Q is,

Any suggestions ? quite happily go down the used route or does anyone know different please.

Pentax 10-17mm, no question. Super sharp & awesome colour rendition.

Ignore the fact that it's "only" 10mm at the wide end, it is a misleading measurement where fisheyes are concerned. The actual field of view will be much, much, wider than your Sigma. 180 degrees in fact.

Forget your previous fisheye adapter experience. This is one of the sharpest lenses that Pentax currently manufacture imho.

I thought the Sigma 4.5mm was on its way for Pentax mount?

yes, it is

won't be cheap though (c. £600?), if you want a bit cheaper, there's some of the odd-brand stuff such as the
8mm Samyang
.
Still shooting in the dark (literally and metaphorically)...

Umm not sure, having seen what RR has sent, I'd need to look at the AOV, I think Park Camera's currently offer the 4.5mm albeight in non PK mounts around £499.

The 4.5mm is a full circular fisheye for crop cameras isn't it ?
That means you'd get a circular image with dark corners, pretty specialist use I'd think.

The angle of view of the sigma 10-20mm is 102.4 degrees at 10mm.
The AOV of the 10-17mm fishy is 180-100 degrees across the zoom range, so considerably wider.

How is 10mm a 180 degree on a fisheye but not on a rectilinear lens? I thought that 10mm is 10mm, isn't it? I must be missing something ...

Hopefully someone will be able to put it in laymans terms for us. It must be to do with the distortion, but I don't know the maths behind it.

I read somewhere that for fisheye lenses the focal length can be misleading and it is better to use the angle of view.
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Apparently.

The 10-20 Sigma is rectilinear, flat field of view, where as the Pentax 10-17mm Fisheye is distoted heavily and is supposed to be that way. The 180 degree field of view is actually measured across the frame diagonally, which means you get somewhere in the region of 145-150 degrees horizontal view. Hope this helps.

Yep - £650-ish but no release date yet. FWIW I absolutely adore my recently-purchased 10-20.

The fisheye lens has a different projection than the rectilinear lenses, so focal length does not reflect field of view in the way we expect.

Just think of them as the exceptions that prove the rule.
Best regards, John
