external flash not firing on IST DS

the pop-up flash works fine, just can't get any external ones to fire any more on the older digital ist* ds. (they used to work) Any thoughts? I've tried wiping the hotshoe contact points a bit but no effect.
on that note, with everything else working fine, any idea what I should ask for selling it?
