(P-)TTL flash probems are often (in my experience) caused by reflections. The same could happen with water. A slight gust of wind could cause ripples that reflect extra light back to the camera and radically change the exposure.
Shooting RAW helps, as does bracketing.

Thanks George
I did recover them as I always shoot RAW - phew
Now I know what can do it I'll have a go with polarising filter to see if that helps.

A polarising filter will kill the reflections, but it might kill the atmosphere of the shot as well, if overdone. If you polarise completely, then something interesting needs to be under the water!

Now I may be talking complete balderdash and piffle here but it seems to me that the area sampled by the "spot" setting seems to be much smaller than on my DS. Consequently I have been using centre-weighted in situations where I would have used spot.

I'vew tried again and getting lots of under exposed on water and a few correct ones. Don't know what's going on by Silkypix soon sorts it out

May be it's a stupid question but did you close viewfinder during the shots? If your eye doesn't cover viewfinder some portion of light penetrates on senor. btw witch mode of metering did you set (point, segment or multi-segment)?

Water is like snow, the extra reflections from the surface can confuse the meter into underexposing. If there is a lot of water in the shot you often need to dial in some exposure compensation.

Having set the camera on tripod and taken a close up of a small wier in AV mode the shot was under exposed even though the camer said it was correct, too a second shot imediately (2s delay max) with excatly the same settings and it was fine.
This also happened in TV, Green and Manual modes. 90% of shots are fine 10% about 4 stops under exposed ISO fixed at 100 ( I hate auto ISO)
Anything but water and all is well
I did see on a thread somewhere that somebody had a problem with Flash doing this.
Anyone else had severe under exposure issues :
