Exposure advice

I have an idea for a picture. I want a nice dramatic sunset as the background, with our MGB in the foreground. If I set my LX up on the tripod, fire it off on "Auto" and then fire the flash (AF280T) at the car at some point, would that give the effect I'm looking for?

It will if you balance the exposures carefully. If you let the main exposure be a silhouette, the MGB will be hardly lit. Then the flash exposure can light the car - don't forget that to fully expose the car you might need a little more flash than you would inside, because there will be no reflected light from walls and ceiling. Some experimentation should get the effect you seek.
