Thanks for the warm welcome !! Once I've finished reading "DSLR for Dummies" (certainly pitched at my level :wink I'll give it a proper whirl...without the camera set to auto !!

Set it to Av (Aperture Priority), and use the e-dial to determine the aperture size you want. Dial in -0.5 EV as well, as that helps to safeguard against the K-x tendency to blow out highlights. If you shoot in RAW, that will give you a little more latitude to fix up exposure that wasn't quite right.

Brand new to DSLR....only experience is with point and shoot digital cameras for the ubiquitous shots of the young 'uns while they were growing up.
