Entries for Fortnightly Competition # 38 - Genius Loci

Genius Loci - 'spirit of place'. Photographs that impart the distinctive atmosphere of the subject location, without needing to know/read about it. Comments are welcome, but judging will be on the photo itself - its immediate impact and its tenacity. Bearing in mind that I'm not a technical judge, I'll be veering heavily towards those that fill the brief - hope you understand. I really look forward (with trepidation) to the entries. Thank you. Taken Friday afternoon - the view that sailors returning from the perilous seas for the last 100 years would see as they entered the River Mersey and approached landfall and home.The two fabled Liver Birds are the spirit of the city and its people.

Jeez, I didn't realise it was deadline day either! Flew out to Hong Kong on Sunday to visit the folks, so I've lost a day, and quite jet lagged too

This is from an open air opera in the village my parents live in. These operas travel the country and perform in a different location every week. Every week they build a stage out of bamboo and sheets of corrugated iron. Despite the 'high culture' appearance, this is very much entertainment for the masses in rural China. In this area (southern China) the spoken bits are Cantonese, but the songs are in an archaic form of Mandarin (as spoken in the capital in the days of the emperors). The chap on the left is mid-song.
