This is from an open air opera in the village my parents live in. These operas travel the country and perform in a different location every week. Every week they build a stage out of bamboo and sheets of corrugated iron. Despite the 'high culture' appearance, this is very much entertainment for the masses in rural China. In this area (southern China) the spoken bits are Cantonese, but the songs are in an archaic form of Mandarin (as spoken in the capital in the days of the emperors). The chap on the left is mid-song.
