Thanks for THAT 'Link' -- I tried it and the shutter count was the same as the one on 'AP'magazine -- 12,486 ( I have not used my K10D since ! )

Having set my cameras to continuously record the file numbers, is not knowing the latest file number enough? The only thing that would need to be remembered is how many times the camera has rotated beyond 9999 and as it creates a new folder number at that point even that should not be a problem.

Like JR I use the image numbers the camaera allocates.
The latest one is IMGP 100-8425
This programme comes up with 8783
A variation of 358?
The K10D was brand new when I received it, in a sealed Pentax Box,
I've occasionally done some multi-exposure shots which might have made a difference, but nowhere near that many.
I am perplexed

The 100 is the folder and the 5563 the file number. Assuming you have the camera set to continuously count then you have shot up to image 5563.

Is it a count of the number of "delivered" pics or shutter presses.
I have noted for example that multi-exposure shots make take several presses but only deliver 1 pic.
As I said I'm perplexed, am I the only one out of step. Could it be that my camera was "used" a few hundred times before being reset and boxed (doesn't seem likely)

It's the number of delivered frames that you have shot. Whatever happened before at the factory is another matter and maybe some cameras are tested more thoroughly than others.
I'm not sure it matters much as it's not so much different to a new car having mileage on the clock when delivered to the customer.
