Please put your brain in gear. Either post a link to the auction, or specify exactly which lens is being sold. From the information you have provided, nobody can tell you anything.

They advertise all over the world on e-bay. I would be very wary of it. Unless you can afford to lose €140 odd on a gamble I wouldn't bother with it. It needs an adapter to fit the camera, so is completely manual and who knows how well the adapter actually fits the camera?

what camera do you have?

lenses that long which are worth having are usually expensive, and are hard to hand hold anyway.

I would start out with something like the Pentax FA 80-320 (second hand ~£90 but you have to find one first) or the Sigma APO 70-300 (~£150? new)

If you have a digital SLR the Pentax DA 50-200 is also very nice.

There is a Sigma 28-300 on Marktplaats today. Highest bid at the moment is €150. It is apparently new. You could try e-mailing the seller to see what price he has in mind and find out more about it. It is in Utrecht, so not too far for you to travel to have a look at it.

I can recommend the Tamron 70-300mm Di LD. Cheaper and lighter than the Sigma 70-300 and Pentax 80-320, and faster at 200mm than the Pentax 50-200 (F4.5 versus F5.6). Suitable for film as well as digital cameras.

In the UK it's just £80 from Tecno. I don't know if they ship overseas.

have you got one of these Iceblinker? I've often wondered if they are any good (fairly idly since I already have an 80-320) but have never come across anyone who actually has one before to confirm whether they are good value or just cheap and nasty (I am quite ready to believe either of Tamron).

Yes I have one. It's sharper and easier to handle than my old SMC Pentax-A 70-210mm F4 ever was.

Made in China - must have a lot to do with the remarkably low price.

I got mine from:

Re the comment on China: I mean the Tamron 70-300 is made in China (despite Tamron being a Japanese company). It seems they make some very good stuff in China these days!

300mm is pretty long on a digital. Don't forget it's equivalent to 450mm on a film camera. And with a 1.5X converter, it'll be equivalent to a whacking great 675mm.

300mm is indeed very long, but for photographing birds, as we tried to do yesterday, it is nowhere near long enough.

We are now looking at 2x converters so we can try 600mm (900mm equivalent) to see if that is good enough.

If not, we're going to have to be a bit closer...
Best regards, John

Both taken with the Tamron (after not much practise).
