The end of Canon and Nikon is nigh

this may seem far fetched to Nikon and Canon devotees, but consider this

Sony have bought out Konica Minolta and Samsung have bought out Pentax. The resources of these electronic giants is vast compared to Canon or Nikon, and you can be sure they havn't moved into photography for fun; they will be intent on carving out a major market share by competitive pricing and technical innovation.

It has already started; they have both introduced anti-shake into their bodies, so avoiding the massive expense you Canon and Nikon fans incur when buying IS or VR lenses.
Sony manufactures its own sensors and Samsung has the resources to do so too. In future they will be able to get the latest sensors in their cameras first before filtering them down to other manufacturers

I personally got nothing against Canon, just their bragging users. They may be one of the big dogs but at the end of the day, when I see a photograph I like, I ask who took that not what took that.

I've seen Sony's line-up and it looks impressive, but saying that, I don't know what Minolta's line-up was like. Sony knows what they are doing and how to market stuff. After all, despite being the under dog, they broke into the video-game market destroying Nintendo's dominance. So, yes, watch out Canon and Nikon (and even Pentax), Sony is coming

So who's in a pedantic mood tonight?

So how old do you think us Pentax Users are?
Best regards, John

Pros who use Pentax 35mm and digital are those of us with large lens collections that would be prohibitively expensive to replace. That meas we started in the "60s or "70s when Pentax and Zeiss were the top dogs.

Pentax wisely kept backwards compatability, something Nikon and the copier-company have not done.

I suspect the K10D is going to create quite an uproar in the C and N camps!

Many camera manufacturers 'sponsor' well known pros by giving them enough gear to fill a decent sized branch of Jessops. I worked for a guy sponsored by Mamiya and I know others sponsored by Nikon and Minolta. I'm guessing, but I suspect Pentax may have stopped doing this in the early seventies; do you remember the ad campaign where there was a shot of a camera and the caption 'Sam Haskins/Spike Milligan's/David Bailley's Pentax'?

Interesting point raised about the age of Pentax users though.

I just had to laught at that comment. I shall, of course, use it in future conversations.

Just an interesting point though, when I was at college, I was one of two people that had a Pentax. The general feeling was that Pentax is 'Not as good as it use to be' and 'Canon is the best'. It doesn't matter if theses comments are right or wrong. What is important is the general feeling about Pentax and if theses two comments represent the general feelings, bye bye Mr Pentax from the camera world.

When I was at college (1972-6) all the cameras were Pentax so you bought a Zenith and borrowed lenses until you could afford a Pentax , in my case a Spotmatic F which is still working if cosmetically challenged.
I heard an archive BBC interview recently (1963ish I think) and David Bailley was asked what qualities a photographer needed, he listed three:

be rude to everyone
wear a leather jacket
buy a Pentax camera

There was a time when 'a Pentax' meant any kind of quality camera in the same way as 'hoover' and 'biro' entered the language

Does that mean if I get a leather jacket, I'll be a proper photographer LOL
