I had just been taking a couple of night shots at a Railway Station and was walking back to my car with the intention of packing my K7 (Fitted with grip and DA* 16-55) away in the light from my car tailgate. Half way across the road the Camera detached from the tripod and fell heavily onto the ground with a sickening THUD!. Thinking the worst i picked it up, The lens cap had not been fitted and the hood was in the reverse stowed position. The hood was cracked through and was missing a chunk but was still usable. Everything else was unmarked and in perfect working order! Phew!!!

Lucky escape there Pete.

The lesson is don't trust tripod attachments.

There, I've been saying this for ages. Tripods can be a nuisance.
I'm glad your K7 had a lucky escape.

on insurance...
I was looking for insurance mostly for when I am on holiday. As it turns out, everything I do on holiday is not covered by the insurance.
We sleep in a tenttrailer which because it is made of tent cloth has no lockable doors so the equipment is not covered.
I tried to convince the insurance companies that on a campsite my car is probably the most secure place because I can hide the equipment out of sight and the doors are lockable. But no, a car is a definite no-no...
Basically I would have to take all my equipment with me when I go to the toilet or shower...
Same goes for trips outside the vacation period, only if someone rips the bag of your sholder you might get a refund.

This is basically the information I got from the insurance companies here in the Netherlands.

glad it's ok, I try to never carry a tripod with camera attached.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

I always carry my camera attached to my tripod and over my shoulder

But not any more after reading this post

I too carry my Camera over my shoulder attached to a Tripod but i normally check that it is secure first! On this occasion i had been photographing the Sunset at a beach and packed up half an hour after it had set. But as i drove away i spotted a lovely old footbridge at a small railway station and as there was still a little light left in the sky i decided to grab a quick shot or two. So i took only the Camera and tripod and attached it in a hurry without checking that the lever was fully home. The consequence of that little lapse you already know!

Have you tried the omroep insurance? That covers pretty much every eventuality, including checking your gear and keeping it in a car. You don't have to work in Hilversum or be connected with the omroepen to get it. It is a bit more expensive than some, I know, but it is pretty comprehensive cover.

I tried them as well, their coverage is better then most insurance agencies but still when you are on holiday there isn't much covered.
There is so much small print which excludes a lot of cases that it wasn't really worth the effort.
