do I nee dto drive one to know a merc or a BMW is a good car ?

or drive a french car to know that it'll break down before I get tot he end of the road ?

It depends how you define good, and it would possibly be that the BMW was a dreadful car, for someone who wanted an economical runabout that was easy to park in towns.

Likewise with cameras. So having used them is helpful when highlighting differences between them.

You can spot a good product without owning it. Remember when the Fiat 500 came out? Great, desirable little car, and I think most people, even if they had no intention of buying one, recognized that. Even if you hated the retro looks, you'd be hard pushed to say Fiat had done a bad job on it.

I'd say no
I know it was probably said 'tongue in cheek', but I think that statement highlights the problem with these polls based on blinkered perceptions rather than user experience.

Someone could just as easily ask, 'Do I need to use a Pentax outfit to know the SDM will fail and the sensor will have staining issues before I fill the first SD card?'
