Don McCullin

I went to see the Don McCullin exhibition at the Tate Modern in February and thought it was superb.
My colleague’s bought me the book last week as part of my leaving gift, in which I found this reference:Comment Image

I've watched a couple of documentaries on BBC4 recently featuring him, one about Palmyra and the devastation done there, and the other where he was revisiting another location he'd photographed previously, this time the north of England. Both were quite interesting, though I think the Palmyra one missed a trick by not showing a more direct comparison between his earlier photos and the later shots of what remains.

The 'Looking for England' one is repeated tonight on BBC-4 (and HD) at 23:00, in case anyone missed it.

And Thursday morning at 03:00, for the insomniacs among us.
SteveH!

Some people call me 'strange'.
I prefer 'unconventional'.
But I'm willing to compromise and accept 'eccentric'.

I can find the 3am showing, but not the 11pm one. Not listed on the BBC site. Have they changed the scheduling?

Well, I managed to record it OK and it was in the Radio Times (yeah, I know, I'm old fashioned), so possibly they got the listing wrong on the web-site.

Ah, is it possible you thought the 23:00 showing was today (27th) not yesterday (26th)? I should probably have explicitly stated the date in my post. Sorry.

Be careful on the very late / early repeats - often they have sign language (person in the bottom right corner) which can be distracting if you're fortunate enough to not require it. Such things usually have "SL" in the listing in the programme guide, but not always.

A little late now, but there was an interesting programme about Welsh photographer David Hurn on BBC4 last week. About 40 minutes long, there was an appearance by Don McCullin too. I expect it will be repeated.

Overall a superb exhibition. His people shots are absolutely stunning, particularly the war zones. I'm not sure they should have bothered displaying his landscapes though

When I saw the McCullin exhibition at the Imperial War Museum a few years ago, the most interesting thing about his landscapes was how rural Somerset seen through his eyes could have the bleakness of a battleground. Never seen Somerset that way before (although some of it can be pretty bleak in bad weather!). The Penguin webpage for his book The Landscape notes that "The imagery of his home county, ravaged by storms, inevitably projects the associations of a battlefield, or, at least, the views of one intimate with scenes of war.". There's more than one way of seeing this green and pleasant land.
