Does your *istD get confused?

Been happening basically ever since I got it, but never really thought it was a major problem...

Mine sometimes gets confused as to what mode it's in, the wheels may not adjust shutter speed, aperture etc.
I figured out all I have to do is to spin the mode wheel right round, through ISO, Save format, WB, Green mode, P, Tv, Av etc. until I get back to what I want and all is ok.

I find this seems to happen more if I've left the hand grip on and the camera off.

Not a major issue, but annoying occasionally.

Funny you should say that...
Since getting the grip, I've found the occasionaly time when it's confused. I've even had it declaring dead batteries and turning off while writing the RAW file. If I take out the batteries from the grip - no problem.

The last time it happened I had 2500mAh NiMH's in the body and 1800mAh in the grip - I've since put the same make and size of NiMH in both body and grip (just wondering if there's some strange thing going on here).

I've yet to try it with only the grip batteries...

I suppose it could just be a battery charge issue.
Although not strictly relevant to the above post, just last night while shooting at a wedding reception, my DL announced "batteries depleted" and then shut down.
A few minutes later, I switched it back on without changing the batteries and it was absolutely fine - the display indicated full charge and I was able to complete the shoot.
I switched the camera back on today and the display showed approx. half charge.............so I don't know why it shut down last night, although I had been using the RTF and the display to review the images. Perhaps the output fluctuates during heavy use and the batteries just needed a 'rest' in order for the camera to read the correct power level!

I think I'm right in saying that the battery state indicator has only 3 variations.
1: Full battery indication means that the charge is within usable limits, not necesarily full.
2: Partial charge indication means charge is nearing the point where they need changing/charging.
3: Flashing indication means camera cannot operate because the voltage is too low.

I have once had a 'confused' situation with my istD where it would not turn off and I had to remove the batteries to turn it off. Power switch was off but the top plate display was still active. I didn't have the grip at that time so that wasn't the cause.

I don't know if the *istD is the same, but the *istDS has a timeout built in, adjustable by the user, that will switch off the camera after a defined interval of non-activity. I have mine set to 30 minutes to avoid it being a nuiscance in prolonged shoots, but as a safeguard against leaving the camera on indefinitely.

The D has the same setting.

I'm rather hoping that when/if the *istD2 (or whatever they call it) is released, us D users might benefit from a firmware upgrade, much as the DS users did when the DS2 was released. I believe that the version 2 firmware for the DS essentially limits the difference between the 2 bodies to the rear screen size.
