I think it's using the flash as an auto-focus assist lamp. It's in the manual somewhere, and it doesn't happen very often.

Sounds quite right - It happens in dark situations and is more likely to happen with the kit lens.I think it's using the flash as an auto-focus assist lamp. It's in the manual somewhere, and it doesn't happen very often.

Did it fire the shot? Was it dark?

AF illuminator? Trying to find something in the pdf of the manual.
It makes sense if that's what it was all about - but it sounded awful.
Thinking about it now though, I think it was the first time I used the flash on AF..... i'd only used it breifly with an old 50mm lens. This time it did fire, and it was pretty gloomy.
So that might be that sorted then! Thanks for helping put that concern to rest.

If it moves shoot it .... if it doesn't, shoot it till it does.

To be sure - try a shot in a dark situation - using the pop up flash. See if it happens again....
It should...
It should...

Actually, I can't find anything about it in the manual!Trying to find something in the pdf of the manual.
Think it must have been there in the *ist-D manual... maybe they forgot for the K10D.
But, yes, that's exactly what it is - a focus assist. And yes, it makes a terrible noise!
If you have the AF360-FGZ or AF540-FGZ they have a silent, red, AF-assist illumination

But the wording doesn't make what actually happens all that obvious.

Chris, so it is!

• In |AF.S| (Single mode), press the shutter release button halfway. The built-in
flash will discharge automatically several times, enabling the autofocus to
focus on the subject easier if the subject is in a dark area and the built-in flash is available.
And I agree - it's not very obvious!!• In |AF.S| (Single mode), press the shutter release button halfway. The built-in

Was taking a photo the other day, popped up the internal flash, half pressed the shutter release .... and then the flash went mental. It was a very very rapid strobe effect, didn't sound healthy.
Is the camera dodgy or have I just missed something?
The camera was set on AF-S with the kit lens. Bit concerned that it might be knackered.
