Do I need Priming?

I have been pondering a lens purchase for a little while now having convinced myself that despite having the great flexibility that my zOOOms offer me – from 10-300mm uninterrupted - I am now missing something that I had in the days of film where I feel I enjoys photography more.

I used to take my use my Tamron 24 and 135’s and a 55mm just about everywhere supplemented by a 70-300mm zoom. The only lens I wished for then was a 28mm for when 24 was just too wide.

I still have the 24 & 135 now supplemented by an SP90 macro and an A50 f1.7. (Ignoring the zooms)

I wonder whether either the 15 or 21 ltd will bring me some of the enjoyment that I miss.

What is missing? Well the convenience of the zooms mean that I can zoom in and out composing my shots without having to physically move about getting into positions and places that I now miss when using the zooms. Of course I could just do the same with the zoom attached but for some reason I don’t – I don’t have to after all!

The question...........Which one? Are there any of you who have either or both of these who wouldn’t mind sharing opinions / images?

I am leaning towards the 21 mainly because I think it might be more useable in general than the ultra wide perspective of the 15 but................I ain’t so sure................over to you.

Cheers MZ

I agree that 21 will be a more general focal length that would be more usefull for more situations.

If you really liked your Tamron 24 from the old days then the DA 15mm would be (roughly) the equivalent for that.

You can also bite the bullet and get the nice limited lens case which fit several limited lenses and fill that one.

I guess it depends on how you use your camera. The main appeal of primes (to me) is that they tend to be smaller than zooms as well as generally offering better image quality and faster apertures. While I hardly ever use f2.8 or f3.5 I appreciate the brighter viewfinder over a zoom, and the fact that if necessary you can sacrifice depth of field in order to get shots in low light.

I'll be taking my 120mm f2.8 to the Top Gear Live show next month. A zoom with similar speed would be massive and might well attract unwanted attention (the website gives a thumbs up for non-professional photography, presumably gauged by the size and type of gear used - I had no trouble with the K-m and kit lens last year). The 120mm looks pretty much like a kit lens at first glance but has a focal length and aperture to keep up with those gigantic white zooms which scream "pro". It also weighs a lot less and will fit in a large pocket!

I find my 21 is my most used lens, using primes is to me like going back to my ME Super days, less time zooming more time looking at subjects and composition.

Considering you liked 24 on film and you still have 24 for you digital, I'd go for 15. It'll give you very similar FOV to 24 on film and for those "it's too wide" you have the 24...

I don't know which is the better lens, but the Pentax smc DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited lens is £579 at SRS but the smc DA 14mm F2.8 ED (IF) lens is only £519, so perhaps the 14mm would be a better bet as it's cheaper and faster???

PS Just noticed that the 15mm is a Limited lens so I guess that accounts for the difference.

I owned 21mm for a while, and could not get used to the angle. in my experience, 24mm is wide enought as a walkabout lens.

Don't worry about lugging big lenses in places which only allow non-pro photography. I've done it many times. Only got approached one. I just said I was a keen amateur. Which I am.

I wish Pentax would make a wide angle wide aperture lens. Having just bagged a 50mm/1.2 I'd love a 15mm version. Even a 15mm/1.4 would be fantastic!!!

The DA15mm Ltd is a very nice lens and is small enough to take up little space in the camera bag. The 14mm is a much larger and heavier lens. When out and about I often take the DA15mm in my pocket and have a zoom on the camera. I like to travel light.

I haven't got either but I like Archie's thinking... the DA14mm seems big, not much smaller than many WA zooms. And I have seen some lovely images with the DA15mm, the 'starbursts' you get shooting into the sun are exquisite and it looks a very undistorted lens. Shame it's so expensive! The DA21mm is cheaper but doean't seem as desirable as a pocketable UWA supplement to the kit lens.

I want a DA15mm... so frickin' bad

Not sure if I'd get away with the Metz 45CL-1 monster flash on the same basis...

I quite enjoy getting better results with less gear. This feeds neatly back into the old primes!
