Discussion for Fortnightly Competition 95 "Texture"

Here's where to do all the talking and moaning!

No moaning - just to clarify.

Given that it's a technical treatment of a photo this time, which is great as I was just about to try some of the grunge techniques, is this restricted to a photo taken during the fortnight as usual, or can it be an older photo processed during the fortnight?

The moaning was just a joke......mind you......

The same rules apply. The photo must be taken within the 2 weeks as normal, from the time the comp was posted.

And, just to be even more clear, you do have a choice of doing as you would like, milamber, to use a technical treatment on a photo, in which case you should be thinking about the treatment you want to apply whilst selecting the composition or, for those that are not as happy to apply treatment like this in pp then take a photo which has a strong and interesting texture as a feature. In the 2nd case, there are billions of choices, so I'm hoping this is a comp which is open to all.

One slight concern I have with this is that the texture photographs demonstrated and downloaded are not necessarily taken by the photographer producing the combined image but by someone else, and in all probability not with a Pentax camera.
While some of these texture images have been donated to the public domain, not all have been and some will therefore be subject to copyright.
While using ready made textures is great for practising and experimenting, how does this fare for producing a competition entry and having non Pentax images featured?

OK.......the main photograph will have, as the competition rules state, been taken with a Pentax camera.

There is no way of checking if the texture used has been produced using a Pentax camera but, actually, does it really matter? Personally, I don't think it does. So, unless someone of authority says that it does matter, things will stand as they are.

Whats stopping people shooting a texture as well? Textures are all around gravel, pealing paint, rust. When I do go out and about I'll shoot whatever was the main subject and always looked for textures as textures from the original place sometimes sit better when used in an image.
Im housebound for a while now but racking my brains to find stuff to use in still life perhaps.

Maybe extra brownie points for entries wholly the work of the entrant?!

Just wouldn't want to see an entry disallowed because it wasn't wholly the work of the photographer or Pentaxed.

There's no problem with people shooting their own texture. In fact, I'd encourage it. But it's not necessary. I couldn't prove it anyway.

Now, before anyone else thinks of this, the texture image used does NOT have to have been taken in the 2 weeks of the comp, only the main photo.

Can of worms...........

This business of using tectures has arisen elsewhere and of course goes back as far as perhaps using Paterson's texture screen negatives.

In principle, all images on Pentax User should be Pentax images. Adding a Photoshop texture would be OK, but in the context of a competition "Textures" does using someone else's textures seem to be what you want?

I'm not making some conclusion from this, just posing the question, but do be careful you don't end up in a deep pit of discord here as it's potentially a minefield. The more you try to define something, the worse it gets!

My comment was only meant as a suggestion as there appeared to be a worry about the source of textures. It is hard to prove where textures and things come from as data with images can become misleading. I put on of my images on Photo bucket to and to grunge thread only to find it was showing as take with my Oly. It was more of a montage but has a grungy feel it was the first layer of a tomb taken few years ago on the oly that showed the data the other added elements and texture were taken with K5 so someimes the camera data hidden.

I'm new to DSLR and new to the Pentax forum and these competitions. Therefore I'm not familiar with Shaun and the thread he started. Please could you provide a link to it so I can understand the requirements for this one.
