It came to nothing, so presumably no investment available or insurmountable technical problems.

It never happened - too many technical difficulties to overcome.
The closest we ever got was the Leica digital back for the R8/R9 SLR's - hugely expensive and, as it turned out, rather disappointing; and that was a bespoke model! We're a long way from a universal digital insert but you never know what the future may hold.

Thanks lads, it's nice to know someone else saw it, it's also a pity it was never fully developed, it would have given us so much more choice, but I suspect it just wasn't technical problems there may have been big company's that didn't want it and bought it out and then shelved it, but that's just my opinion, I'm sure with today's technology it could be developed.

Effectively it was for the Leica system. Very expensive and very poor.
The biggest problem I see is power supply. You could make a back for a LX or any other similar Pentax, but the cameras are getting old, it would need more power and the back would cost more than a new DSLR.
Just think if a digital back for the ME Super came out tomorrow at £500 how many people would now want it? Not enough I suspect. And when your ME Super wears out what do you do then?

Good point John, you could buy another SLR to use the cartridge in but now the market is flooded with DLSR's there wouldn't be much point in any further development, would have been nice though.

I just wondered if anyone else had seen it.
