Focussing screens for film cameras are much larger and wont fit your K7

Focussing screens have tended to get brighter over the years as technology, particularly treatments such as Optibrite have improved.
For example: I believe there is 1 stop difference in metered EV between a Z1 and Z1P screen, when placed in the same camera.

Thanks Steve, yes so it seems. Looks like the P30T has a diagonal split which I'd like after trying horizontal in my old K100DFocussing screens have tended to get brighter over the years as technology, particularly treatments such as Optibrite have improved.

Have you considered that they may well be of different thicknesses, are incredibly easily marked. You might be better off just buying a replacement screen on ebay.

There are plenty articles on the net about how to cut down a screen to fit on Pentax Digitals. Just Google.

The focusing screen is a critical component, so the DIY approach looks very flawed to me. It's the actual screen construction, the thickness, the size, all needs to be correct.
Why spoil a perfectly good camera with uncalibrated replacements?

yep yep, it's all good. I have done a couple of ME screens for K100Ds. Not too hard. Happy to shim if need be.Have you considered that they may well be of different thicknesses, are incredibly easily marked. You might be better off just buying a replacement screen on ebay.

I like DIY and have had success before. I know what you mean about killing a perfectly good camera but this one is apparently not a goer.

The screen catcher is a good idea, even for someone just removing a screen.
I notice that your original page has a link to greyhounman's site in which he says the DS and ME Super screens are both about 1.5mm thick.
I think some of the Chinese suppliers use a FF Nikon screen, which is widely available retail.

It gets worse...a Nikon screen cut down and put into a Pentax camera? Maybe it's just me, but I'm amazed that anyone would even consider it as an option.
Best regards, John

Just be careful. I seem to remember that split focussing screens can affect the cameras autofocus - it's been a while since I heard this but know there are a couple of old threads somewhere.

I'm just amazed that anyone could be bothered with the hastle and the lack of precision in a critical component, I think John is referring to spoiling your new camera, not the old one

A split-screen isn't that accurate anyway. I mentioned in another
thread that I've just tried my old ME-F with the 35-70mm AF Zoom
and it still works a treat Switching to a MF 50mm f/1.4 the
Green light is very sensitive much better than on digitals. It
even lights up 2 red arrows showing which way to focus, but the
split-image shows in focus even when the red leds are on.
No idea how it knows which way you have to turn the MF lens

Well you could always have a Canon one instead!

I am about to embark on a focus screen resize for my K7.
I have used an ME screen in the past. I was wondering if the later screens got brighter or anything ? Have the chance to pick a free P30T body that has the split collar.
Any thoughts much appreciated
Pete
