Hi all

does anyone know where I could get an underwater housing for the *istD?

I've looked everywhere and I can't find one. I would even be willing to get one custom made.

Thanks

There are some "generic" housings that will allow a few metres depth. I think they're made by "Aquapac". ( http://www.aquapac.net/ )If you want real diving quality housings though, I don't believe there was a housing made for the *ist-D. As you say, a custom housing may be the way.

Have you tried Google?

Hi catterm.
I'm working on that same problem.
What r your specific requirements?
depth, lenses, flash etc.

my goal is upto 5 meters, fixed focal length 50mm. for snorkeling, and pool/water shots. inexpensive, easily built.

I'll provide more detials if what I'm building might work for you.

The SLR case on the aquapac website would seem to fit your job description Don, and at £80 of our english pounds doesn't seem too expensive. Just waiting for a guinea pig to try one out and report back!

I'm thinking more along the lines of $20.00 canadian.
a few inches of 8-10" PVC drainpipe, two end caps, glass plate from an old halogen work lamp, some aquarium glue, a couple small pieces of 2" pvc pipe, some wire, a switch , and a piece of bycycle tire tube for a gasket on the switch, and one o-ring......
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Not sure I'd trust my camera underwater to a "home-build". If the aquapac leaks you could sue the makers!

at one time the only housings you could get were home built.

hmmnn lawyer at $250.00/hr to sue a company over a $200.00 camera housing and damages to a digital camera that depreciated 50% two days after ya bought it.....
V.S.
Excuse me mr. insurance man...I dropped my camera while boating...or...lost it at the airport.....
or
Sorry 'bout the little cost overrun...had to get an extra camerabody for that shoot...
or better yet:
Honey how much is that new 10 mp pentax?

I'm actually after a "proper" underwater housing that will go to +60m depth.

Sounds like I'm out of luck

I had an aquapac compact camera housing (more of a plastic bag than a housing really). It cracked and sprung a leak (in 10cm of water) the first time I used it. I don't think I'll be trusting my *istD to one.

EWA-Marine do a similar bag style housing which is rated to 50m, but I'm not sure I'd trust it either. I think some manufacturers (Ikelite?) do generic SLR housings which might work, but you'd probably only have a limited range of controls.

Try BSOUP, the British Society of Underwater Photographers:
